Bi-mong (Dream) (2008)

Jin wakes up from a nightmare of a traffic accident. It drives him to the very spot and witnesses an accident, which replicates his dream. He follows the police to the suspect’s home and watches as Ran denies the hit-and-run accusation since she was asleep the entire night. Jin explains his dream to them and asks to be charged instead. He is convinced that there’s an unexplainable connection between the two. They discover that when he dreams, she acts out his dream in her sleep.

Soom(Breath) (2007)

Jang Jin, who's on death row, tries to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a sharpened toothbrush handle. The news is seen on TV by Yeon, a sculptress who seems to walk around in a permanently catatonic state.
Yeon, who lives in an immaculate, soulless apartment on the edge of Seoul, has a perky young daughter she adores and a boring husband to whom she never speaks. On impulse, she takes a cab to the prison one night, waits outside until dawn and then asks to see Jang, claiming to be his ex-girlfreind She's let in only when the prison's CCTV operator (an unseen, almost divine presence) overrules the main gate's guard.
Their meeting is entirely taken up by Yeon's confessional about how, at age 9, she technically died for five minutes when she held her breath underwater on a dare. She tenderly tells him not to harm himself any more, and leaves.
It's the first of several scenes in which Yeon pretty much has to carry the picture in the face of Jang's total silence (perhaps explained by his throat injury, though more practically by the fact that Taiwanese thesp Chang speaks no Korean). In contrast, at home, Yeon's husband carries all the dialogue and she remains mute.
In the most off-the-wall development, Yeon "themes" her subsequent visits by season, bringing wallpaper and other accoutrements to decorate the visiting room and entertaining Jang with a seasonal song each time. As each visit ends in closer physical contact -- like a year's relationship compressed in time -- Yeon's husband becomes suspicious.

Hae anseon (The Coast Guard) (2002)

erhaps the reason why this movie is getting such a bad rap is mainly a fault of its well-meaning, but still incoherent style and narrative structure. I have not read any articles on this movie or interviews with the director to know what his overt intention was, but in the end I think the movie falls short of its mark due to Kim's perennial fixation on obsession, whether it was his intention to delve into this subject matter or not. On most levels, obsession is a largely private affair, and any exegesis of obsession enmeshed within the loaded geopolitical situation that is now Korea would require a broader vision and canvas matched with a technical command of story telling than any that Kim has been able to provide here or elsewhere. However, one thing that I must praise Kim for is the reality with which he portrays military life in South Korea. It is, in my view, the grittiest, down-to-other depiction on the silver-screen of life as a grunt doing mandatory military service in Korea. I should know, since I've done my two years' service, as no doubt Kim also has. The situation might be unreal (a loose-cannon grunt suddenly acquiring the killing skills of Jason Bourne) but the military's reaction to it certainly wasn't. The ineptitude of the commanders to stop the problem, the fear of the soldiers and the conflict it breeds within, and, most important of all, the corporal punishment that gets amplified as it spreads down the chain of command.

Nabbeun namja (Bad Guy) (2001)

Do you believe in love at first sight? Han-gi (Jo Jae-hyeon) does!! So much so, in fact, that when he first sees plain-looking student girlie Sun-hwa (Seo Won) in the middle of a crowded city centre, he can't help but run over to her and give her a big ol' snog - despite the fact that her boyfriend proceeds to beat him across the spine with a large piece of street furniture. And the army are waiting to give him a kicking. And she's none too shy when it comes to gobbing on people.Shocked at the resounding failure of his attempt to pull (who would ever have thought that forcing yourself on a complete stranger wouldn't work?!), our Han plots his revenge by framing the girl as a pick-pocket, forcing her to deal with a loan shark, and seeing to it that she winds up miserably employed at the nearby brothel where he just happens to do a spot of pimping. Well, they didn't call the film 'Bad Guy' for nothing.This is a bleak, downbeat and wretched film, featuring scene after scene of sexual violence, awful characters, and downright nastiness. It's not particularly surprising to learn that it was swiftly assigned the "controversial" tag upon its release in its native Korea, but that's far from the worst thing about it. After all, there's nothing wrong with being controversial, but there should really be some sort of worthwhile message, and failing that it would at least be nice to be presented with an even and comprehensible plotline.'Bad Guy' fails on those counts thanks largely to the unintelligible writing and direction from Kim Ki-duk - and, what's more, it also fails on the performance front. Seo Won has next to no screen presence and though it's easy to sympathise with her circumstances, relating to her as a person is another matter entirely. As for leading man Jo Jae-hyeon, he's given next to no lines to speak and as a result does little more than stare a lot and try to look moody. Even worse is that, when he does finally open his mouth, it's to squeak like a fancy boy - talk about killing the mood!!

Shilje sanghwang (Real Fiction) (2000)

"Another fascinating and frustrating film from Kim Ki-Duk. He reminds of Lars Von Trier in a lot of ways, in that they both have a lot of the same weaknesses along with being remarkable filmmakers. The thing that bothers me the most about both of them is the degree to which their films obviously serve as allegories. In this film in particular (like Von Trier with Dogville) this aspect is particularly emphasized to a debilitating extent. Also, it's worth noting that both filmmakers seem to have a lot of the same questionable ideas when it comes to women, but that's somewhat besides the point.

Ag-o (Crocodile) (1996)

Violent thug Crocodile lives under a bridge by the Han River in Seoul together with a peddling boy and a homeless old man.
